Introduction

High dropout rates during clinical trials have long plagued pharmaceutical research — hampering accurate results, escalating costs, and delaying drug-development timelines. Several factors contribute:

  • Limited understanding: subjects often don't fully grasp the trial process, leading to uncertainty and premature withdrawal.
  • Subpar communication: inadequate contact with healthcare providers breeds a feeling of disconnection.
  • Physical discomfort or unexpected side effects: if not addressed promptly, these raise dropout rates.
  • Financial strain: hidden costs, time commitments, or income loss can push subjects to leave.

Proposed solution

Using Firebase, Java for Android, and Next.js + TailwindCSS, the “3 Bits” team proposed a two-pronged solution: an Android app for subjects and a web app for trial organizers and physicians.

  • Android app for subjects — interfaces with the subject's smartwatch for continuous monitoring of vital signs, synced to Firebase for real-time tracking.
  • Web app for organizers and physicians — a dashboard of subject details, health status and payments, with a color-coded (red/yellow/green) system to prioritize patients by wellness.
  • Improved communication — direct messaging between subjects and physicians, fostering trust and ongoing support.

Recognition and anticipated impact

The proposal earned first prizes at two hackathons — Fergusson College 2022 and PCCOE 2022. While not yet implemented, its potential to reduce dropout is notable:

  • Enhanced subject engagement through real-time health data, making subjects active participants.
  • Stronger doctor–subject relationships via direct messaging, reducing alienation.
  • Prompt health monitoring through continuous vitals tracking.
  • Efficient trial management via the priority-based patient list.

Conclusion

By addressing the primary reasons subjects drop out, the “3 Bits” team set out to make clinical trials more efficient and subject-friendly — optimistic about the impact when it's brought into the real world.
